RANKING FOR CINEMALAYA 2024 SHORTS
1️⃣ PRIMETIME MOTHER (4/5) - Funny and thought-provoking! This film has touched many elements, ranging from tv production to altruism to poverty porn. Despite its wide scope, they were able to compress it all into being a mother. They gave a show that’s worth applauding not only because of the laughter it gives but also because of the thought it leaves behind.
Pang-hapon ba o pang-primetime ang galawan mo bilang isang ina? It’s easy to judge other people’s actions and label them into certain categories. But once you’re trapped into choosing between being a primetime mother or being human, you might just dance the night away. Primetime slot or not, this show deserves more screentime.
2️⃣ REFLECTION IN THE MARSH (3/5) - The breathtaking visuals alone are enough to tell a story. Kahit wala masyadong linya, tingnan mo lang ay alam mo na ang mensaheng dala nito. This docu may have limited resources, but it did whatever it can to spread its message through a worthy cinematic experience. No matter how big or small, it’s still one step closer to reaching their goal of preserving Agusan Marsh.
3️⃣ MARIPOSA (2/5) - The flow of scenes could’ve been better. The series of questions could’ve been handled with more care. Masyadong tadtad din ng texts minsan. Gayunpaman, mauunawaan mo ang kanyang pinagdaraanan. Nag-iwan ito ng marka at kirot sa ating mga puso. Mapapa-aray ka talaga lalo na nung sinabing “Tingin siguro sa akin ni Lord, ang tapang tapang ko.” 💔
4️⃣ CROSS MY HEART AND HOPE TO DIE (1/5) - If this is the first episode of a thriller series, then it’s a promising start. But for a short film, they could’ve used their limited time to further discuss their topics because it’s alarming and triggering. With its chosen ending, the film’s creativity was more evident than its heart for the people who have experienced it.
5️⃣ SHOREDUST (1/5) - Aanhin mo ang Avengers kung may 𝘚𝘩𝘰𝘳𝘦𝘥𝘶𝘴𝘵 naman. The images, both beautiful and disturbing, can affect your mood. The film’s treatment made you curious on what’s going to happen next with the characters, but it’s barely enough to make you feel something for them. Sing-nipis ng shoredust ang pake mo sa kanila.
6️⃣ I WAS WALKING ON THE STREETS OF CHINATOWN (0/5) - A vlog entry with several photos that failed to paint a thousand words and emotions. In order to explain everywhere, narration is inserted everytime. Hindi sapat ang mga pinakita nila kung kaya’t kinailangan pa nilang banggitin ang mismong mensahe bago matapos ang pelikula.
7️⃣ ALL THIS WASTED SPACE (0/5) - Kaya ba wasted space ang title nito para masabi nating wasted time rin siya? Maganda sana yung huling eksena pero hindi maganda ang kanilang naging paglalakbay patungo duon. Andaming nasayang na oras. For what it’s worth, pang-best in ASMR ang sound design nito.
8️⃣ UNTITLED (0/5) - Masyadong maingay at nakakairitang panuorin. Andami nilang sinasabi na parang may graded recitation na nangyayari. They put too much effort to make the scenes look natural and funny, but it’s too cringey and forced. The lead actor says it’s all about storytelling, yet they failed to give a good one.
9️⃣ MAMA (0/5) - Hindi maganda ang pagkakatahi sa mga eksena. Pilit na pinagdugtong-dugtong ang mga kwento ng nanay. Dahil hindi na talaga kayang magkwento, idinaan na lang sa texts para ipaliwanag at pagdikitin ang lahat. Imbes na makiramay ka sa kanila, wala ka nang maramdaman.
