The Gospel of the Beast (Cinemalaya 2024 Opening Film)
Directed by: Sheron Dayoc
The main character in this movie has a lot of suppressed emotions. He is angry, violent and fearful. At the same time, he is still naive with how dark the world can be. While it’s human nature to feel bad for him, you can’t help but feel nothing about it.
The film is lacking in conversations that would make you sympathize with their situation. Whenever they would talk to each other, it’s not helping to form a bond. The connection between the characters is weak. Therefore when someone dies, be it a friend or a relative, you’re apathetic.
You’re not invested nor triggered with the things that they’re showing because there’s no emotional attachment to it. The film may look appealing in terms of visuals, but it’s not appealing to the heart.
Not a moment in this movie that would make you root for the main character with whatever revenge or redemption that he is doing because his journey is not worthy to be followed.
In fact, none of the characters’ story seem to matter anymore. Brutal scenes are being inserted everywhere—without trying to understand the reasons and motivations behind each character. Showing perspectives is not an option in this film, making it less engaging.
Violence is something common in the Philippines. We may have become numb of the pain or the movie’s direction is just ineffective. Either way, it failed to make a strong impact.
Maaaring halimaw ang mga karakter na nandito.
Pero hindi halimaw ang paraan ng kanilang pagkwento. Kaya sa huli, wala rin itong naging epekto.
