Hayop Ka / You Animal (2020)
Directed by: Avid Liongoren
How to show infidelity the cutest way possible?
By creating a full-length animated movie and using animals (instead of humans) as the storytellers.
For a few stolen moments, the cuteness worked. The graphics are pleasing to the eyes and the voice-overs are full of life. You can feel the dedication behind each of the character’s voices.
As the movie progresses, you see no development with the story and the characters. The protagonist is stuck with the same old pattern. The scenes are repetitive with no valuable information being added. The storytelling is monotonous.
The screenplay doesn’t give the opportunity to explore the life of the characters and to share the reasons behind each personality. Scenes happen for trivial reasons, and mostly just to poke fun and laughter.
The conversations are insincere. The message is straightforward, but the execution is filled with mockery. The confrontation scenes become a laughing stock, rather than a reality check. The lesson is not imparted in its most ideal form—which should have been straight from the heart.
The integration of animals and humans for this movie is underwhelming. The representation of each animal species is nothing but the usual and ordinary, losing the opportunity to discuss the inhumane and extraordinary personalities of human in a broader perspective.
Aside from its technical elements, this movie has no other significant offerings, lacking insight and perspective for its chosen topic and theme.
