Kono Basho / This Place (Cinemalaya 2024)
Written & Directed by: Jaime Pacena II
You have characters from different countries, and their culture was barely touched. You have sisters from different mothers, and their personalities were barely shared. You have great actresses who can deliver emotional scenes, yet the film relied more on its cinematography.
Everything in this film is just underwhelming—except for its visuals. But what’s the use of a beautiful photograph when it has no memories?
It’s as good as empty.
The film failed to establish special moments that you can hold onto. The scenes are flat and not gaining momentum. As much as you want to feel for the characters, the film keeps pushing you away.
At some point, it feels like the movie is too selfish to share its process of healing. Instead of trying to reach out like a person, poetry and imaginery would be inserted. Not that it’s a bad thing. But nothing beats personal interactions and connections.
You are watching things from afar.
You are an outsider in 𝘛𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘗𝘭𝘢𝘤𝘦.
