Moro (2024)
Directed by: Brillante Mendoza
The main language used in this movie is Maguindanaon. Most actors sound like they’re reciting a line they’ve just memorized. It doesn’t feel natural. Laurice Guillen seems uncomfortable saying her dialogues, and it becomes a hindrance to express her emotions properly. All the actors are more convincing when they are speaking in Tagalog.
With the limited scenes that Piolo Pascual and Baron Geisler have, they would not pass as brothers. Actually, all of the characters here has a weak connection with one another. Having contrived interactions, they don’t feel like a one big family.
The movie failed to utilize its platform to address important issues. All conversations are insufficient to make an impact. Most characters are saying one-liner statements, unable to create discussions that truly matter. They started this kind of topic, but seems like they are also afraid to continue talking about it.
There are too many big stars in this movie, but they are just decorations. They only appear for a few seconds saying few insignificant lines that contribute nothing to the story. Their portrayals are unremarkable.
Whenever there’s a group of people in one scene, you can easily distinguish who are the Maguindanaon people and who are the actors. The latter feels like they are wearing costumes with no attachment to its culture.
The cinematography tried to make everything look beautiful. But with the lack of powerful direction and compelling script, it’s pointless.
