PATINTERO: ANG ALAMAT NI MENG PATALO

Patintero: Ang Alamat Ni Meng Patalo (QCinema 2015)

Directed by: Mihk Vergara

A classic Filipino game reached greater heights and made deeper sense through this film’s way of storytelling.

From its intro scene alone, you can already feel their intense dedication. Pinaramdam nila sayo kung gaano ka-seryoso ang tingin nila sa larong Patintero. Para sa mga batang ito, hindi ito biro.

This is the real deal.

You hear them strategize. You see them practice. The investment they have for this game is so contagious — that their energy and enthusiasm are easily passed on to you.

You are now part of the team.

Naiinis ka kapag patalo sila. Natutuwa ka kapag panalo sila. Apektado ka na. Nakakahawa ang pagiging bata nila. Mabilis kang nakapasok sa mundo nila.

Their world is a breath of fresh air; it is free from lies and inhibitions. Hindi nagsisinungaling ang mga bata. Lahat ng sasabihin nila ay totoo. Lahat ng nararamdam nila ay papaniwalaan mo.

They can fly and soar high. They can have powers with special effects. Too good but it’s true. They are superheroes in their own right. Mahirap paniwalaan. Pero yun ang katotohanan. Para sa kabataan.

The SFX and the GFX duo, the scoring and the graphics, blended well with the narrative, allowing you to experience the character’s perspective in full blast.

The actors stayed true to their nature — them being just kids. They are sincere and straightforward when uttering their lines, making it easy to fall for them and their characters.

They can be carefree, but they can also get careless.

May nababahagi silang maling kaugalian, kagaya ng pagmumura at paghahamon ng away, na hindi nila naitama at nagmukhang pangkaraniwan na lamang... Leaving us with the impression that this film may be about kids, but it is made for adults.

May aral silang iniwan, na maaaring magmukhang pangkaraniwan para sa mga bata, pero malaking bagay para sa matatanda at mahalaga para sa lipunan natin ngayon.

The words coming from a kid’s mouth resonate wisdom for adults. The game that is so intense deliberately made sense.

Patintero is not only a game of might.

This is a way of life.
