Sa Tahanan Ng Aking Ama (Theater Play 2024)
Directed by: Jerry Respeto
Set in 1940s during the Japanese occupation in the Philippines, this play follows a prominent political family in Negros Island—standing on a crossroad between defending their family and defending the nation.
The production design looks realistic and aesthetically pleasing. The lights complement the props on stage. The blocking of actors are well-placed, making sure they are seen on different angles.
Jethro Tenorio and Glecy Atienza owned the stage with their consistently good portrayal. Chase Salazar, Gino Ramirez and Vino Mabalot also carried some of the scenes. While the rest of the actors are not convincing.
The transition between different timelines is not smooth, always putting a shortcut to one’s grief and agony. It fails to show how the characters are experiencing things. As a result, you’re not emotionally connected with them. There’s no journey worthy to be followed.
Choosing between family and country is the most interesting dilemma in this play, but the discussions concerning that matter is on a surface level. You’ll only learn some basic information about their opposing views.
The process on how the characters decide is not shown. The internal conflict within the family is weak. The war setting is mostly used as a backdrop. The story didn’t give justice to its title “Sa Tahanan Ng Aking Ama” as the father figure and family elements are disjointed throughout the play.
The play being 2.5 hours long is unnecessary. Scenes are dragging and boring, while the ending is underwhelming. Lines are getting repetitive—without contributing anything new to their topic. You’ll get tired of them explaining things—instead of them showing what’s happening. The script and direction didn’t leave a good lasting impact for the audience to reflect upon.
